Title: Our Technology Future and Homeland Security

Abstract:
Technology is progressing at an ever-increasing pace. Within the homeland security space, we will need tools to help stop the bad guys, enable the good guys, react to mother nature, and secure our citizens. We will review the Technology Lookout list and burrow into details on a few examples relevant to CCICADA.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Erickson served 10 years as director of Environmental Measurements Lab (now NUSTL) and led the transition of the lab from DOE into DHS when DHS was created. He then served as Science Advisor to DHS Science and Technology for 10 years, where he established and advanced the technology scouting and horizon scanning capabilities for DHS before retiring late 2018 with 22 years of Federal service. His personal research has focused on the environmental impact of PCBs and other persistent organic pollutants. He earned his PhD in analytical chemistry from the University of Iowa.  He retired from DHS as a senior executive scientist at the end of 2018. The last decade with DHS had him looking for technologies to help DHS fulfil its mission, including technologies to assist first responders, disaster workers, and counterterrorism. Dr. Erickson is a “futurist” who studies new technologies, their potential for security and other applications. He is now consulting on two fronts: Our technology future and the environmental impact of PCBs and similar chemicals.
